Over the last 20 years, researchers have gained tremendous knowledge on early brain development and it's lifelong effects on learning. Early Childhood Educators everywhere have adapted and began implementing guided, play-based learning in their classroom environments, to provide the highest quality education for our youngest learners.

This is what we offer to every child here at Building Blocks!

 Effective, developmentally-appropriate practice does not mean simply letting children play in the absence of a planned learning environment, nor does it mean predominantly offering direct instruction. In the middle of the continuum is guided play. Educators create learning environments that reflect children’s interests; they provide sustained time and opportunities for children to engage in self-directed play (individually and in small groups). Educators also strategically make comments and suggestions and ask questions to help move children toward a learning goal, even as children continue to lead the activity.

Our center is a true play-based, child-centered environment where learning is creative and FUN! This evidence based approach allows children to make their own choices which builds autonomy. Here at Building Blocks, children are provided open-ended, hands-on activities. Children explore materials and create an opportunity for individual discovery and construction of knowledge. Our large outdoor playground is used as an extension to the indoor learning environment! Children are outdoors exploring, learning and playing as often as possible to engage all of their senses and spark curiosity. The role of teachers in a child-centered approach to learning is to observe, build connections with each individual child, participate in the children's choice of activity and support them in all areas of development. Each classroom is set up for individual exploration, as well as large and small group learning experiences daily!
